What the Fekete? Surprise call for fast bowler
TASMANIAN fast bowler Andrew Fekete was the biggest surprise in a new-look Australian squad named to tour Bangladesh next month.
The 30-year-old took 37 wickets in the last Sheffield Shield season and was also a part of the Australia A squad that recently toured India.
National selector Rod Marsh said he was confident Fekete would be a capable replacement for rested Test pacemen Mitchell Johnson and Josh Hazlewood.
"He can generate reverse swing and that ability could be extremely useful in the conditions we expect to encounter in Bangladesh," Marsh said.
Apart from Fekete, West Australian opener Cameron Bancroft, 22, was also named in his first Australian squad with David Warner ruled out with a broken thumb.
Just five players in the 15-man squad - captain Steve Smith (33), off-spinner Nathan Lyon (46), batsman Shaun Marsh (15) and fast bowlers Peter Siddle (57) and Mitchell Starc (22) - have played more than 10 Tests.
Meanwhile, Australia beat England by eight wickets in the final ODI at Old Trafford to wrap up the series 3-2. Australia's bowlers, led by Mitchell Marsh (4-27) and John Hastings (3-21), restricted England to 138 in 33 overs. Aaron Finch (70no) and George Bailey (41no) then combined for an unbeaten stand of 109 as the tourists reached the target in 24.2 overs.
