What's in store for Nina in Offspring's return?

OFFSPRING fans should expect a dramatic reunion when Australia's favourite oddball family The Proudmans return to our screens next week.

The much-loved romantic comedy/drama has been revived two years after it looked set to finish on its fifth season.

"The thought of pushing ourselves creatively to make the show again at the level we all pushed for in the last five series and the challenge of that was just too enticing and I thought let's just do it," star Asher Keddie told The Guide.

"There's something about the Offspring scripts; they're so intoxicating to read."

The entire cast and much of the creative team have returned, picking up the story of obstetrician Nina Proudman (Keddie) 18 months after the events of the season five.

In Wednesday's season six premiere, the Proudman family will be rocked by a "shocking family secret". The status of Nina's relationship with Leo is also unknown at this point.

"Selfishly, I feel like I don't want her to land anywhere too solid because I really love the romantic comedy element of the show," Keddie said.

"Perhaps it's OK that she may never be the type of person who can embrace stability. She yearns for stability though and that's what I find interesting about her."

Nina and her sister Billie (Kat Stewart) are the heart of the show, helping each other to navigate the ups and downs of life. Nina's daughter Zoe, to late partner Patrick, is now 2-years-old and the entire Proudman family is helping to raise her.

"What I love about Offspring is that it's not a traditional family," Stewart said.

"Yes there are the mum, the dad, the kids and the grand kids but it's also a very modern take on family. You don't have to be related to someone to be family. I love how they're a disparate gang of people who find each other... the show has a generous spirit but it's not saccharine."

Stewart is happy to report Billie and her muso husband Mick (Eddie Perfect) are still going strong. The new season will see Billie return home after going on the road with Mick and his band overseas.

"She would have been on Skype with Nina and Zoe 12 times a day," she laughed. "I'm so pleased that they're in a really good place. But of course it's never going to be completely smooth with Billie."

TJ Power and Dan Wyllie join the cast; Power plays a lawyer named Will Bowen, while Wyllie will guest star as Dr Angus Freeman.

Off screen the Offspring family has expanded as well. Keddie gave birth to her son Valentino in March last year, while Stewart welcomed her second child, daughter Georgia, just three months ago.

"It's just been the gift that keeps on giving," Stewart said. "It's been such a huge part of our lives. It sounds corny but you do become a family. It's just such a fun show to work on."

Offspring premieres on Wednesday at 8.30pm on Channel 10. Fans can also register to preview the episode on TenPlay.
