Whispers abound of council election delay

RUMOURS of local government elections being postponed have not made their way to Clarence Valley mayor Richie Williamson's desk.

But another North Coast mayor suspects the delay will be announced next week.

Lismore mayor Jenny Dowell says she "wouldn't be surprised" if the September 2016 elections were pushed back by six months as the NSW Government scrambles to make its decisions on controversial council amalgamations.

Council delegates will be reporting back with any news from the Local Government NSW annual conference in Sydney next week.

"The minister's address will be very interesting," Cr Dowell said.

"He might let out of the bag news about the future of local government amalgamations and other reforms.

"The rumour is that the local government election might be postponed for six months.

"He has previously said they wouldn't be - but the rumours aren't going away."

Next week the Independent Pricing and Regulatory Tribunal is due to hand down its list of councils that \failed to make the cut in the government's Fit for the Future audit.

Clarence Valley mayor Richie Williamson was unaware of the election postponement whispers.

"I haven't heard anything, but there is plenty of talk going around," he said.

"With the upcoming conference, I think there is a bit of scaremongering going on and people lobbying for positions.

"But the minister's address will be particularly interesting.

"What he says will be a scene-setter for the whole conference."
