Who needs windscreen wipers? P1 hypercar uses 'the force'
WHEN you can travel at 300kmh, who has time for wipers?
Not anyone driving a circa-$2 million McLaren P1 hypercar.
Engineers of the new P1 are working on a system which could do away with windscreen wipers, instead using an invisible barrier to keep it clear.
The UK-based manufacturer says the system would use high-frequency sound waves and is similar to those used by the military on fighter jets.
It can push aside rain, bugs, and possibly even bird poo - as long as the car is moving.
The system is also believed to have additional aerodynamic abilities as it creates less drag.
The McLaren P1 concept car has traditional windscreen wipers, but production versions to be delivered next year are expected to feature the new technology.
Given the P1's ability, it's probably best to keep your hands on the wheel. It is powered by a 3.8-litre twin turbo V8 petrol engine and the lightweight electric motor, the McLaren P1 storms from standstill to 100kmh in just 2.8 seconds, and hits 200kmh (124 mph) in 6.8 seconds.
