Why taking a break from technology could boost well-being

THE last thing you would expect from a keynote speaker at a technology conference is a call to put your phone away.

But that is exactly what New York businesswoman Arianna Huffington claimed we all need to do to improve our well-being. She has teamed up with Samsung to create an app called Thrive with an aim to help balance technology and humanity.

Huffington suggests the first step is to not put your phone by your bedside.

"I know you love it, just don't sleep with it,” she said.

The Huffington Post and Thrive Global founder insists taking a breather from our devices will help us reconnect with ourselves, our loved ones and our work.

"I can't think of anybody who is more pro technology than I am ... what I have learnt is that we are longing to also remember that the human operating system needs downtime - it's not a bug, it's a feature,” Huffington said at the Samsung Developer Conference in San Francisco.

"In this always-on hyper-connected world we live in, technology is at the centre of everything we are doing, we are sometimes becoming overwhelmed and there is that longing to take back control and to take charge of our lives.

"When we do that, we are much healthier, much happier, much more creative and much more fulfilled.”

The Thrive app will be available on any Samsung phone from December with the app available on other phone brands to be confirmed.

The app allows you to put the phone in "thrive mode” to avoid distraction.

If someone calls or texts they receive a notification that you are in thrive mode.

"It's a positive kind of FOMO - fear of missing out on being disconnected occasionally,” Huffington said.

The app also displays your social media consumption and gives you the option to put time limits on the various social media apps you use.

The writer was at the Samsung Developer Conference as a guest of Samsung.
