Woman caught visiting jail with $8K worth of drugs in vagina

AN ELI Waters woman will face a nine-month sentence after she was caught with $8000 worth of buprenorphine hidden in her vagina while visiting her boyfriend in Maryborough Prison.

Sarah Avery, 20, pleaded guilty in Maryborough District Court yesterday morning, charged with supplying dangerous drugs with circumstances of aggravation.

Crown Prosecutor Sandra Cupina told the court in December last year, Avery was visiting her then boyfriend in the Maryborough Correctional Centre with the man's 13-year-old.

"The officers had received information that she (Avery) was bringing drugs in," Ms Cupina said.

Ms Cupina said during a search, officers observed a string coming from Avery's body.

"She admitted she had something in her vagina," she said.

"The removed packet contained 28 strips of the drug (buprenorphine) and notes addressed the man she was visiting."

Ms Cupina said Avery had been promised $100 per strip by the boyfriend if she made it through.

"But the defendant said she had changed her mind," she said.

"Had the drugs made it in, they would have been worth between $7000 and $8400 in prison."

Avery's defence lawyer told the court his client had been pressured for some time to bring the drugs in, and needed the money that was offered.

"My client had a car off the road and needed to get it back on the road, or buy a new one which would have been expensive," he said.

"She is a 20-year-old, unemployed young woman who supports a 13-year-old child and is in the early stages of pregnancy."

Judge David Kent said he hoped Avery understood how serious the offence was.

"(Drugs) erode discipline in prison," Judge Kent said.

"And when that happens, people get hurt and killed.

"It affects their ability to beat addiction."

The judge said he thought Avery's best option was go move to Melbourne and be with her close mother.

Avery was given nine months of imprisonment in a suspended sentence.
