Woman takes roundabout then left into river

A FEMALE driver has escaped unharmed after driving her car into the river at Chinderah early this morning.

Water rescue services, fire rescue personnel, a HAZMAT truck as well as a tow-truck driver are at the scene.

It's expected to be a couple more hours before the fully submerged vehicle can be extracted from the river as emergency personnel are waiting for a licensed diver to arrive from Brisbane.

An eyewitness has told residents she saw the driver lose control after exiting the Wommin Bay Rd and Chinderah Bay Rd roundabout, mounting the kerbside and mowing down a roadside pylon before barrelling into the river.
