Wonders of women to be honoured

TWEED Shire Women’s Service will recognise wonderful women of the Tweed in the coming months.

Manager of the service, Tracy Asby, said the Wonders Of Women Outstanding Achievement Awards would recognise women’s community efforts.

Ms Asby said the awards were a part of the Wonders Of Women strategy, released in January this year to raise the profile of women in the community.

“If we can show that women contribute to the community, others might think before raising their fists,” Ms Asby said.

The recent Wonders of Women Art Show held at the Tweed Shire Women’s Service office in Murwillumbah was the first project to come to fruition.

Ms Asby said positive feedback had given the service the confidence to make it an annual event.

“We have had lovely feedback and overall people felt really honoured to be part of the inaugural exhibition,” Ms Asby said.

A 2010 calendar, which sells for $10, has been released by the service to acknowledge community leaders. Ms Asby said the calendar was decided on so people would have something to refer to throughout the year.

“It was about having something people wouldn’t just read and put away.”

Nominations for the awards open today and will close on February 1. Nomination forms can be downloaded from www.tswomen.org.au .
