Work Christmas party couplings can get awkward says survey

ALTHOUGH three out of four singles have had a crush on someone they work with, only two in five think the Christmas party is a good opportunity to make a move.

A recent poll of more than 1300 Australian singles on dating website RSVP revealed that 76% of singles have had a crush on a workmate.

Furthermore, male respondents were more likely to have taken a fancy to a workmate when compared to females (81% versus 71%).

RSVP spokeswoman Kari Taylor said workplace crushes were nothing unusual.

"Workplace crushes are common - especially considering we spend so many of our waking hours at work and in close contact with our colleagues," she said.

However, less than half (40%) of singles surveyed think the office party is a good time to make a move if you are interested in someone.

The survey shows that single men (44%) are more likely than single women (35%) to think the Christmas party is is an opportune time to pull out the moves.

"Tensions may have been building all year, however, the majority of singles do not think the work Christmas party is a suitable time to make a move and one of the key reasons for this is that you'll be creating juicy office gossip," Ms Taylor said.

Although only 18% of singles say they have 'got together' with a workmate at a Christmas party, some 65% have witnessed their fellow colleagues getting it on at end of year celebrations.

Of those who had 'got together' with a colleague at a work Christmas event - 37% of singles said it made them feel uncomfortable at work after the party.

Women were marginally more likely to say it made them feel uncomfortable when compared to men (38% versus 35%).
