Counselling for abattoir workers after man slices face, neck
UPDATE, FRIDAY, 1.25pm: THE MAN who was airlifted to hospital after a workplace incident involving a saw yesterday is now in recovery, Northern Co-operative Meat Company CEO Simon Stahl said.
He said yesterday's surgery of the employee's face and neck, which were cut while the man was sawing beef for quarters, was successful.
Mr Stahl said there was an on-site counselling service available to all employees at the meatworks.
"In addition we take time out and have a talk about such incidents and encourage people to seek some help or talk to us if they require," he said.
THURSDAY, 11.45am: IT WAS a routine job for a Casino Meatworks employee that resulted in a serious injury and an airlift to the Gold Coast University hospital this morning.
The 35-year-old injured man was sawing beef for quarters when the saw "grabbed and shot back up towards him getting from his collarbone up through his neck into his jaw and mouth", one of his colleagues told The Northern Star.
He said it looked "horrid" and that "there were other co-workers holding him together".
The equipment was described as "powerful".
"The injuries looked quite severe to say the least ... other co-workers (were) holding him together," one of the other workers said.
UPDATE, 10.30am: A DOCTOR on scene at Casino Meatworks has decided the man involved in a workplace injury should be taken to Gold Coast University Hospital instead of Lismore Base Hospital.
The 35-year-old suffered cuts to his face and neck.
Ambulance crews were called to the scene at 8.20am.
A Westpac Life Saver Rescue Helicopter on-road crew, including a doctor and paramedic, arrived a short time later.
The helicopter is now on the way to meet the medical team and take the man to the Gold Coast.
UPDATE 9.05am: A 35-YEAR-OLD man has been taken to hospital with cuts to his face and neck after a workplace incident at the Casino Meatworks.
Ambulance crews were called to the site on Summerland Way at 8.20am.
The man was taken to Lismore Base Hospital in a stable condition.
THURSDAY 8.45am: PARAMEDICS have been called to the Casino Meatworks abattoir where an incident involving an injured worker is taking place.
The Westpac Life Saver Rescue Helicopter on-road vehicle is on its way, while the helicopter is on standby.
A doctor is also on the way to the scene.
