Workers begin to bring more parks and one-way to Kingscliff
KINGSCLIFF is about to get more car parks and a one-way street.
Work started today to turn Marine Pde into a one-way street for south-bound traffic and provide 50 extra parks.
The $600,000 upgrade is expected to take 10-12 weeks and will be carried out in several stages.
Tweed Shire Council explained, in a statement, that public consultation had found residents wanted more parks and the area to be spruced up.
"Parking has been a key issue in the Kingscliff community for many years," the statement said.
"Extensive community consultation in early 2011 to plan a proposed Kingscliff Central Park revealed Tweed shire residents overwhelmingly believed there was a need to address a lack of car parking in Marine Pde.
"The current state of the Marine Parade streetscape was also identified as a major concern during public consultation for Kingscliff Central Park."
The council said pedestrian safety and speeding cars were also an area of concern.
Therefore, work will now include reducing the carriageway width to create extra parks, realigning the road to discourage speeding and beautifying the parade with tree planting.
Workers will initially remove existing line marking and paint new lines to designate one-way traffic conditions
.Barriers will be erected and signs installed to clearly show one-way traffic flow along Marine Pde, from Turnock St to Seaview Rd.
The council also advised residents the section of road and footpath in front of the Kingscliff Beach Hotel was not part of the current project.
"The hotel has lodged its own development application for an upgrade and this portion of Marine Pde might be upgraded in the future, subject to development consent for the application being issued."
