World sounds to fill Tweed for cause
A musical masterclass of world sounds will fill the Tweed when the Uki Refugee Project benefit concert comes to the Regent Cinema on Tuesday, July 12.
Featuring virtuoso jazz guitarist Marc Mittag, South African refugee Valanga Khoza and percussionist Greg Sheehan, the concert will have an emphasis on groove and melodies.
Music fans can look forward to a rare appearance from Mittag, who seven years ago headlined with Herbie Hancock’s legendary band The Headhunters before disappearing from the limelight.
Mittag said he was looking forward to his return to the stage.
“We were asked to contribute to the Uki Refugee Project and I thought it was a great cause and it seemed to thematically work in with the music I’ve been writing,” Mittag said.
“It’s a beautiful opportunity to give the music a purpose to help other people and indulge in some beautiful music making.”
Khoza is equally as excited about appearing at the concert, in what will be his first return to the area in seven years.
He said the nature of the concert meant a lot to him and fans could expect a traditional and cultural sound from his set.
“I love the area and each time I came there, I thought ‘wow, I would love to move there’. Raising money for the refugee cause is a great thing. I used to be a refugee myself, so it means so much to me.”
Khoza’s musical repertoire has been added to since he last appeared on the Tweed at the Byron Festival, with a new array of instruments providing a more cultural sound.
“My sound is similar, but with new additions including the Kalimba√ and Jaw Harp, my sound is a lot more traditional now,” Khoza said.
