World’s Greatest Pub Crawl

MARYBOROUGH reclaimed their Guinness World Record for the largest ever pub crawl back from London in 2006, and are odds-on to hold steady when the fun event is held again in 2009.

Publican Clay Clayton, whose Criterion and Post Office hotels date back to 1864 and 1870, and are local favorites, says the event attracts a lot of ‘non-drinkers’.

“People who never step foot in a pub most of the year join in on the day to participate in the Guinness World Record attempt,” Clay says.

“It is a fun festival atmosphere, hundreds of the participants dress up in great costumes on the day. This year’s event will also have a family concert in the city parklands on the Friday night before the crawl.

“They don’t have to drink alcohol – soft-drinks and bottled water are actually encouraged, as long as you purchase at least one drink at each location and have your registration card stamped.”

More than 4000 pub crawlers flock to Maryborough from around Australia and other parts of the globe to quench their thirst for history, and Clay is confident that 2009 will be the biggest year ever.

“We had some stiff competition from London, who won the title back in 2006, and a Canadian city also made an attempt in 2007,” Clay says.

“I think Maryborough’s great community will make sure we win again in 2009. This is a massive event, that is based on an old favorite Aussie tradition. It is only going to get bigger and better”.

Did you know?

In the late 1880s, Maryborough was Australia’s second most important immigration port after Sydney. It was the place thousands of sea-tossed immigrants from mainly England, Scotland and Europe took their first shaky steps on Australian soil after months at sea, before heading to one of its hotels to celebrate.

At its peak there were almost 40 pubs in the immediate Maryborough area – many of which remain today and are part of the history-making annual pub crawl.
