Worthington of the Bat? Place your bets for new Batman

SAM Worthington is the Aussie favourite to pick up the mantle of Batman - but he has a rogue gallery of Hollywood A-listers to get through first.

The Avatar star is the leading Australian actor to don the cape and cowl according to online book maker sportsbet.com.au.

Speculation for the role spiked this week with the announcement of a Superman and Batman movie - due to hit cinemas in 2015.

The film, a sequel to this year's Superman reboot Man Of Steel, will be directed by Zack Snyder.

The superhero pairing was announced at Comic Con this week by Snyder, who also directed MOS.

Worthington, 36, has a few big names to content with though.

The Dark Knight Rises star Joseph Gordon-Levitt, whose character inherited the Bat Cave at the conclusion of the trilogy, is the $4 favourite to get the gig.

Hollywood heart throbs Ryan Gosling and Chris Pine are next in the market at $11 each.

Worthington sits as the best priced Aussie at $13, with Liam Hemsworth ($26) and The Wolverine's Hugh Jackman ($101) also in with a shot.

Christian Bale, who portrayed the dual role of Bruce Wayne/Batman in the Christopher Nolan directed trilogy, says he's done with the character.

But sportsbet.com.au say if he can be talked out of  retirement, he's in with a chance at $13.

"Henry Cavill is a sure bet to be Superman, but the role of Batman is wide open," said sportsbet.com.au's Shaun Anderson.

"Gordon-Levitt is the favourite due to his ties with the last film, but there is plenty of value in the market if the director decides to go in another direction."

Sunshine Coast Daily reporter and lifelong Batman fan Patrick Williams said he was ready to audition for the role of Bruce Wayne/Batman.

While the build-up to the movie will be huge, it isn't tipped to be the biggest film of 2015, with Avatar 2 priced at $2.50 to top the 2015 box office followed by The Avengers: Age of Ultron ($3.50) and Star Wars: Episode VII ($6.00).
