Writing's on hull

SOME Formula Powerboat drivers have inspirational messages painted on their boat hulls and they're the sort of easy-to-digest inspiration you need when your competitors are travelling more than 160kmh.

"Drive it like u stole it" read one on Jake Greentree's boat number 57 in the Formula Three class and "Drive fast, turn left" read another on the boats as they awaited scrutineering at the bottom Prince St, Grafton, yesterday.

Veteran South Grafton pilot Peter Phillips is looking for a podium finish in Formula 3 this weekend after a fourth and a technical problem ruined his opening round of the 2012 Australian Formula Powerboat Grand Prix at Taree in March.

"It's not going to be easy," he said.

"I think some of these guys have got things together a bit better than they did at Taree."

"But I think it's not out of the question for me to get on the podium."

Phillips has piloted "tunnel boats" - as the twin-hulled speed machines are known amongst veterans - since 1987 and learned the trade from his parents Paul Phillips and Liz Fisher, who raced them in the 70s.

Although Phillips will be racing in boat 100 in F3, he will also have an interest in 57.

"Jake had some problems getting spares from the US in time, so I've lent him my spare motor," Phillips said.

"We've burnt a couple of piston rods getting it ready, but I think we'll have it right. I hope so."
