Tributes paid for man who drowned at Coast swimming hole

MESSAGES of support for the family and friends of a young man who lost his life at a popular swimming hole near Nambour on Sunday afternoon have been posted to Facebook.

One local, Janet Buckley, said the young man was out, having fun with friends at the waterfall on Image Flat Rd, near Nambour.

"Being a local, we all know this place, we have all swam here, we have all had fun here," she commented.

"It's very sad and I can't believe that this has happened but everyone needs to know this young man was a beautiful, gentle, caring and a fun loving person and will be missed by everyone that had the pleasure of knowing him."

Police reported the 20-year-old had fallen into the rock pool at the bottom of a waterfall on Image Flat Rd, about five kilometres north-west of Nambour, about midday.

Queensland Ambulance Service paramedics administered CPR and tried to revive him but the young man was pronounced deceased at the scene.

At least a dozen of the man's friends were on the scene at Kiamba and as the events unfolded, they were visibly distressed and comforted each other as a number of nearby residents watched on.

It is unknown whether the man had hit his head, or what had caused him to drown.

The water hole is known by locals to be especially treacherous for swimming following heavy rainfall, which creates heavy suction between the upper and lower rock pools.

A Queensland Police spokesperson said officers were still on the scene about 5pm yesterday investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident and will be preparing a report for the coroner.
