Young paints dire picture of Rocky

KEPPEL MP Bruce Young has paid tribute to his regional roots in his first speech to Queensland Parliament while painting a dire picture of the biggest city in his electorate - Rockhampton.

Mr Young presented himself as someone personally in touch with his electorate's values through a very detailed history of his life.

Educated in Rockhampton, Mr Young later worked at a mine in Dysart before opening up a medical business with his wife in Yeppoon.

He told Queensland Parliament during his maiden speech on Tuesday afternoon that Rockhampton was once a vibrant Queensland city.

"Rockhampton has fallen to be the poorer cousin of Gladstone, Mackay and even Emerald," Mr Young said.

"There is a cyclone out there in Central Queensland and everything is going at a 100 mph. And stuck in the eye of that cyclone are Rockhampton and the Capricornia Coast standing still."

Mr Young named the barrage on the Fitzroy River as Rockhampton's greatest asset.

He also stressed the importance of flood proofing the Bruce Highway.

He said his electorate's lack of forward planning for affordable housing would be one of the LNP's biggest challenges.

Mr Young congratulated Gladstone MP Liz Cunningham for bringing the issue to parliament's attention.

"I wish to assure the Member for Gladstone we are listening now," he said.
