Youngblutt to run again
FEAR of a Greens takeover has led Tweed Shire Councillor Phil Youngblutt to dump retirement plans and contest the council elections in September.
In January, Cr Youngblutt announced he was going to call it quits and not run again.
But after consultation with members of the community he changed his mind.
"A lot of people, not just private individuals but also businesses and people in government, have asked me to run again," he said.
Cr Youngblutt said he and his supporters were concerned the Greens would take over the council.
"There is a concerted effort from the Greens to take over council," he said.
"It would be a disaster if they do it.
"Some of the things the Greens want are just impossible."
At the time Cr Youngblutt announced his retirement, he said there were issues he wished were settled, such as the Byrrill Creek Dam project.
His backflip came days after Labor's council candidates announced former Prime Minister Kevin Rudd would visit the region to launch their campaigns.
Mr Rudd will join Michael Armstrong and Reece Byrnes in Banora Point next week.
But Cr Youngblutt said he was unconcerned about Labor candidates winning positions on the council.
"Labor is not as bad as the Greens," he said.
"At least you can work with them."
Cr Warren Polglase said the council elections this September were like no other for the shire.
"I have never seen a council election here where there is so much politicising," Cr Polglase said.
