Your say on protecting our rivers
TWEED residents are invited to have their say on the Northern Rivers Catchment Action Plan, a framework for government and community to protect the Northern Rivers as a unique and desirable place to live.
The review of the plan is high on the priority list of John Williams, the new chair of the Northern Rivers Catchment Management Authority (NRCMA).
Mr Williams was appointed to the position in January by primary industries minister Katrina Hodgkinson, following the resignation of the inaugural chair Dr Judy Henderson.
He said the review process would provide several opportunities for residents to participate.
"The new CAP (Catchment Action Plan) will set direction for natural resource investment for the next ten years and will keep this momentum going, but will also incorporate an emphasis on landscape resilience and climate readiness," Mr Williams said.
"While the CAP is a regional plan, it's important that we engage with communities of interest to accurately describe what people are feeling about their local area and natural resource management priorities."
Mr Williams said the importance of the plan was clearly visible, with more than $70million in state and federal government funding for Northern Rivers restoration projects since 2005.
"This significant level of investment has been more than matched by in-kind and cash contributions from community and other local organisations, effectively doubling achievements on the ground," Mr Williams said.
"However, there is always more that can and needs to be done."
