Youths butcher family’s eight guinea pigs in dead of night
POLICE are chasing three youths for the murder of eight guinea pigs in their cage at the front of a Mount Coolum home.
A resident of Beryl Tce said the family pets were left "decapitated" and "mutilated" in the overnight killing on Saturday.
Two of the guinea pigs were found outside the cage and another six were inside the cage, which was on the lawn.
Police said a resident saw three male youths fleeing early in the morning.
The guinea pigs' owner posted a sign outside the home shaming the culprits yesterday.
"A group of teen boys came into our yard and killed all eight guinea pigs brutally in the early hours of Saturday 3rd August," the sign read.
"Shame on you."
RSPCA Queensland spokesman Michael Beatty said the act was one of the worst recent cases of animal cruelty he had heard of.
"We have had some disgusting displays of animal cruelty, but this is beyond appalling," Mr Beatty said.
"Sadly, these types of animal cruelty cases all too commonly lead to other forms of abuse against people later down the track.''
Police ask anyone with information about three young men roaming Mount Coolum early on Saturday morning to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
