Ziems takes maiden title

CURRUMBIN livewire Corey Ziems clinched his maiden Queensland Championship Circuit crown after finishing second at the Sunshine Coast Pro on Saturday.

Billed as a head-to-head showdown between Ziems and Burleigh young gun Thomas Woods, the competition produced another nail-biting finish.

Had Ziems finished third in the final rather than second, Woods would have secured the series by 10 points.

However, the Currumbin kid rallied hard and edged out his adversary by 120 ratings points (2590 to 2470) to secure the Queensland Open men’s surfing title.

In doing so, Ziems also booked a spot in the 2011 ASP Quiksilver Pro trials on the Gold Coast, alongside Woods.

“I’m absolutely wrapped to win the series and gain that spot in the trials,” Ziems said.

“I had a real battle with Thomas in the semi-finals and after that I knew I had to place high in the final to take the overall series win.

“So I just went out there and gave it my all.”

However, Ziems and Woods weren’t the only competitors celebrating, with Yamba’s Matt Jones toppling Ziems to take the event title.
