Zonta helps birthing mothers

THE Dusk Room at South Tweed Sports Club was a hive of activity yesterday when scores of people met with a single objective.

Zonta's Gold Coast and Tweed Heads branch held a birthing kit assembling day to aid women giving birth in third world countries.

"As well as contributing to the prevention of infections in newborns and mothers this was a great opportunity to meet other local women willing to give their time to make a difference," said Zonta member Marie-Elise Allen.

With door prizes and raffles, much socialising and snacks on hand, the task was made lighter.

A shoe and handbag sale also helped raise funds for the cause.

The kits cost about $2 each to assemble.

The kits include a piece of one-metre-square black plastic, two pieces of cord, a pair of gloves, and a piece of soap.

The cost of freighting the kits to various countries is met by AusAID.
